Just back from Los Cabos
My DH & I hadn't been to Cabo in a long time, and the first time we'd been, we weren't all that crazy about it, but in the meantime we'd fallen in love with other places in Mexico, and it's gotten so popular, we thought we'd give it another try. So we booked a long weekend at the Marquis Hotel Los Cabos and took off -- first ever 3 nights without our kids! A break after 19 years!!! Woohoo!!!
Unfortunately, I'm still not really a fan of the area, maybe it's the arid desert and the dryness, so that even while looking at the ocean, it's just not as appealing and lush as say, Puerto Vallarta or Cancun.
And Cabo San Lucas looks awful to me, a lot like Tijuana on the water! We drove through in our rental car and never even stopped. Yuck! Maybe we're too old
!
San Jose Del Cabo is much nicer, and feels a little more like Mexico to me. It has a pretty square and church, and is a nice place to spend an afternoon. We had an amazingly strong margarita at Tropicana, and a good dinner at the Italian restaurant, La Dolce.
Our hotel was gorgeous. The Marquis is architecturally beautiful, and the employees were wonderful. We explored some of the other high end hotels, like Palmilla and Las Ventanes, which were beautiful, but nothing came close to the beauty of Esperanza. An amazing place, and we had a fantastic, (expensive!) lunch there, which was worth every penny just for the views.
Would I go back? Probably, but only because it's so close to southern Ca., and there are some amazing resorts. But not for a long vacation. To me, Los Cabos just doesn't have quite the same appeal as the Mexican mainland...
Oh -- one last tip! The Mega store is a great place to stop and buy snacks in San Jose del Cabo, and right outside it is an amazing taco shop, Cabo Mama. Delicious fish tacos!
