Jaguar Inn or Turneffe Flats?

Turneffe! Honestly, I haven't been to either, but we stayed near Jaguar Inn and spent a week on Glover's, one of the other atolls. The flyfishing is RENOWNED on Turneffe and the snorkeling should be fabulous. From Jaguar Inn the snorkeling would require a boat trip out to the reef, 20 or so miles away. JR would give you access to land tours, but it's easy (depending on how much time you have) to split your time between a base in Cayo (hiking, caving, villages, ruins) and an island. How much time do you have?

TF is a spectacular atoll and perfect for anglers, divers, snorkerlers, kayakers and people wanting a remote quiet island. One lodge per island, meals are served family style. Jaguar Reef is in a small village on the mainland, about 10 miles from the reef, accessible to jungle reserves, waterfalls, rivers, cvae tubing and a few other nice restaurants in the area.

Do you want only beach time or are you interested in other things, for example: Maya ruins, caving, hiking, canoing, rapelling, villages? I hope you can muster at least 9 or 10 days - plenty of time to explore out from an inland base like the San Ignacio area, do an overnighter to Tikal in Guatemala (highly recommended - breathtaking!), then have 4 or 5 nights on an island. Tell us more about your interests and we can throw out more opinions. Happy trails!

Hello Hopefulist,
It looks like its going to be a Sat. - Sat. trip. The other couple has been to Tikal so we will have to do it on another trip. Primary interests will be beach, snorkeling, kayaking, ruins, as well as flats fishing (w or w/o guide). Not necessarily into the party scene. Thanks so much

Turneffe is really expensive so it would be off our list, and if your companions have been toTikal they may have done the San Ignacio thing, too. With only a week you might want to pick Ambergris which has easy access to beach, snorkeling, kayaking, and (I've heard rumors - nothing specific) fishing and do a day trip up the New River to the Lamanai ruins. I haven't done that but have heard it's a great day trip. If money isn't an object check out an inland/island combination here:

Hope you find just what you're looking for and then tell us all about it when it's over!
