International Drivers License in Costa Rica

We are planning on renting a car in Costa Rica. Do we need to have an international driver's license or is the US one enough? Also, any experience with Thrifty Car Rental?

Thanks.

Our US license was sufficient. But I can't help you with Thrifty input - we used Tricolor and found them to be reasonable and great to deal with.

Check out Thrifty reviews on frommers, fodors, and tripadvisor (then go with tricolor or europcar, or other...) Don't forget to get a letter from your cc company about your coverage, so you don't pay more than you need to.

Tricolor treated us very well. No letter from cc needed. Made copy of passport and drivers license which was all that was needed when we were stopped by the police. They seemed to be just checking. Looked at some list and waved us on.
