Immediate help

I need to decide (within 12 hours)where to go. Single, early 30's, travel solo, want relaxation, moderate entertainment, water sports, nice beaches, culture, and safety. I have found some awesome AI deals in Cozumel. What about the Playa de Carmen? Never been to this area ever. Thanks in advance!

I'd say go to PDC and start calling some of the smaller hotels and see if they have any last minutes rooms -- Playa Maya, La Tortuga, Luna Blue. They are not AI's but you'll meet more people.

In full discolosure I have yet to go to Playa (am leaving for my trip next week) -- but I've been doing tons of research and Playa seems to fit what you are looking for.

I go to Playa solo most of the time and have no problem. There is a peep meet on 7/12 in Playa for people who like to meet while in town. Not sure where it is but the info is on www.playa.info. Most of the AI's are in Playacar and the beaches have been a bit compromised there in the last year but the beaches in Playa are great. I would go with the small hotels too and eat out on your own. I never liked eating by myself at AI's but have no problem in Playa. Have a great time!

We enjoy Playa del Carmen, but it is quite crowded and busy. We prefer Cozumel or Akumal. I am a woman and have traveled alone with a young daughter in Akumal and felt very safe, using normal precautions. You will love either place, but Cozumel is quieter, in general. Depends on what you are primarily looking for.

Our favorite activity is snorkeling, and PDC doesn't offer that off of the beaches. Another reason we prefer the other two.
