How touristy is Akumal

We are thinking of taking our winter vacation
with our 5 & 7 yr. old kids to Akumal, just
south of Cozumel. We are not looking for a
big touristy scene, but rather quiet, somewhat cultural getaway on a beach. Would
Akumal fit this description and is there enough to do there for a week? Thanks for any
feedback!

When I first went to Akumal in the early 1980s, it wasn't touristy at all. There was almost nothing there. These days, that whole corridor is what I would consider quite touristy and nearing overdeveloped status. But one's expectations and experiences vary.

Hi
We stayed in Playa Del Carmen at the end of April and took a day trip to Akumal. It is beautiful there and not very touristy (in comparison to PDC & Cozumel). Looks like a great place for a family vacation lots of kids on the beach, friendly atmosphere etc. Great snorkeling there at Yalku lagoon. There is a very good open-air beach front restaurant(Lol Ha). You would be close enough to Tulum, Xel-Ha, Xcaret for day trips. I was told there isn't much night-life there if that is a consideration for you. All things considered it sounds like Akumal might be a good choice for you. Check out the Locogringo web site for some good info.

Well lets just say that Akumal is less touristy than most places on the east coast and think you would be very happy there. Check out locogringo.com This is where people from akumal hang out.Another possiblity would be Isla Mujeres which has a great kids beach like akumal but is less expensive but more crowded and touristy than Akumal.
