How many days should we stay in Guadalajara?

Hi--
My husband and I are going to be in Puerto Vallarta for 7 days. We want to fly into Guadalajara and then eventually take the bus to PV. We plan on staying at a bed and breakfast in Tlaquepaque. We have the option of staying anywhere from 3-5 days to see the Guadalajara area. We are in our 50's just to give you an idea of what type of things we are interested in seeing. We do not spend a lot of time shopping other than to buy some souveniors for our family. We plan on walking through the plazas, taking the Tequila Express tour on a Saturday, and visiting some museums. My husband is a bird watcher and would like to see if he can go on some type of a bird watching tour. I'm not sure how much time we should we should spend in Ajijic, but I would like to go there. I would like to see the Basilica de Zapopan. Does the Teatro Degollado have performances during the day? It sounds like it might be interesting walking through the city parks. I would appreciate suggestions on how many days we should plan for the Guadalajara area. We want to keep busy during our stay there rather than spending time relaxing. We will do that in Puerto Vallarta. Thank you.

Longer is better imo! Sounds like you have plenty of interests to fill 5 days in Guadalajara before your week in PV.

Hi Meo4: We'll be in Tlaquepaque in mid-January, staying at thge Casa de Las Flores...I wonder if that's your place as well? We too are birders and I wonder if you know about the birding trips run by Alejandro Martinez in Puerto Vallarta...they look very good. His telelphone number is (322) 222 7407 and he told us to call him when we get there to arrange our birding with him. I would like to hear about your birding in Guadalajara when you get back.
Thanks, Nancy

Nancy, Janet Z did a birding trip from Vallarta last year, she could give you first-hand info on the various tours if she's following this thread.

Also, for birding you can go north a couple hours to San Blas, which is one of the more famous birding spots in Mexico because it has many varied habitats. Janet was there last year and did very well on a trip thru the mangroves. My wife and I also were in SB but had to leave early due to a death in the family, but it had some interesting birding opps.

Nancy, here's a link to Janet's site with pics from Vallarta and San Blas (she may not notice this thread since it's about 'Guadalajara'):

Hi Nancy--
Yes, we are planning to book our reservation at the Casa de Las Flores. From the reviews I read, it is a wonderful place to stay. Also it is my understanding that we can easily catch a bus each morning to take us into Guadalajara. I think the bus ride is only about 15 or 20 minutes. In regard to birding in Puerto Vallarta, my husband went on 2 birding trips with Alejandro Martinez last month. He found him under
"www.puertovallartatours.net"
Michael said that Alejandro speaks excellent English and is very knowledgable about the birds in the area. He went on the "El Tuito" tour and the "Los Juntos y Los Veranos" tour. Michael liked both tours and plans on doing more birding with Alejandro when we return in November. I know that Michael would enjoy going to San Blas. We clicked onto the website Bill sent you. Those pictures were fantastic. After looking at them, I said to Michael he should arrange going there. If anyone knows a good person to contact to book one or two days in San Blas for birding, please let us know. We love Mexico and are looking forward to returning in November. Thanks for responding to my question.

meo4, I'm pretty sure Janet went on the "El Tuito" tour out of Vallarta, I'll email her and point her towards this thread so she can give you the name of her guide.

In San Blas there's a very good English-speaking guide for the land tours (he also has a panga - small open boat - for bay and ocean tours), his name is Armando Santiago. Janet and I both went with him (in different months). He has email but I've misplaced it at the moment. If you email the lady at the Hotel Garza Canela in SB she can send you Armando's email address or maybe Janet still has it ... http://www.garzacanela.com/home.htm ... he works with specialist groups doing tours to San Blas like Wings. The Garza Canela is the best place in town to stay, where most of the birding tours start from, and the restaurant is excellent, with a cordon-bleu cook (no kidding).

For the mangrove trip (which I didn't get to do, but Janet did) the most recommended guide is Chencho, who doesn't have email but I think the Garza Canela manager can set this up for you.

Here's a link to the Wings birding tour to San Blas, you can get an idea of what to expect in the San Blas area from it ... http://wingsbirds.com/tours/view/4
