Hotel prices in Buenos aires

I've always wanted to visit Buenos aires, and was hoping the peso devaluation + poor economic conditions would make a visit more affordable.

But having monitored various hotel websites for several months already, I've seen no price adjustment whatsoever reflecting the devaluation of the peso. Interestingly, all BA hotel rates I've seen are quoted only in US dollars

Any feedback on why the hotel rates have not been significantly reduced? Or better yet, any tips on good BA hotels which have dropped their rates to attract business?

You would think the hotels in Buenos aires are so filled to capacity that they are unwilling to drop prices.

Try www.buenosaires.com Click of the section that says "promotions"...There are a number of bargains, including the 5 star Claridge for $100 per night, taxes & breakfast included. Also, every 4th night is free, so a 4 night stay is only $75 per night.

Check web sites. Many hotels now charge in pesos rather than dollars, so divide the price in half. castelarhotel.com.ar for example, charges an internet rate of $95 pesos ($47.50 dollars) for a junior suite. This includes breakfast & taxes.

The list goes on but you will not find most of these deals posted on Travelocity, etc.

Darrell,
Actually, most of the hotels are very empty now. The rates were already far lower in 2001 than in 1998 (I was there both years), so the hotels may not be able to drop the rates any farther. What good would it do? Buenos Aires has very few business visitors now, and it really isn't a tourist town (which is the best reason to go), so a price drop won't increase volume. Also, they are always slow to update websites, regardless of price fluctuations. You need to call them directly.

Actually I'm going in May. You gotta search for hotel deals. I got a executive suite at the Etoile hotel for significantly less. It's a nice hotel in the Recoletta area. Here is the email I received from them: (Prices are in Pesos)

Etoile Hotel appreciates your contact. We are glad to inform you that we have availability for the time that you request.
The rates are the following:

STANDARD ROOM: $110+ TAX ( 21 % ) IN PESOS
EXECUTIVE SUITE: $132+ TAX ( 21% ) IN PESOS
DIPLOMATIC SUITE: $ 154 + TAX ( 21% ) IN PESOS

Includes American Buffet Breakfast, access to the Health Club and free
parking.

If you need any further information, please contact us.
Best regards,

Maria Julieta Maldonado
Reservations Department

I've checked the prices of several hotels. The key is to ask for a quote in pesos. Contact the hotel directly. Do NOT ask for a quote in US dollars. The economic situation there is worsening. Today, the government closed the banks indefinitely until things get settled. Most hotels have a webpage and an email link. Many responded when I emailed.

Good luck.
