Hotel near Santamaria Airport with lots of day trips available?

My husband and I will be in Costa Rica on a Habitat for Humanity build in March. We will spend a day in San Jose before the build starts, and then the group will visit Braulio Carrillo National Park on our way to Cartago, as well as Irazu because it is close to where we will be working. Since we only have 3 days/nights after that, we would appreciate suggestions for a hotel, inn, or B&B that is fairly close to the airport and has a variety of day trips available. Both Finca Rosa Blanca and Xandari look lovely but are above our price range. Also, we love the water but lived on a Pacific island for 4 years, so beaches are not that important. If the idea of staying near San Jose doesn't make sense, we're open to other suggestions. Thanks!

Orquideas Inn would be a great choice for you. They have an excellent tour service, called Wady Tours. Orquideas is about 15 min. from the airport and rooms range from $60-maybe $130 (I haven't priced it in awhile). We sometimes stay in the less $$ rooms, not the ones on the road (noisy and even less $$) but garden rooms. These are your two choices within steps of the restaurant, office, gift shop, and pool. There are other larger and pricier options a short walk uphill.

We like Siempre Verde also. Great area. As far as I know, however, they don't have their own tour company onsite. The daytrips you'll want to do are in that general area, though.

Thank you so much. We leave next week and will be staying at Casa Bella Rita after we finish our Habitat build in Cartago.

The owners of Casa Bella Rita are from my hometown in Michigan and I have read excellent reviews on their B & B in various publications. Please do let us know how you like it.

Make sure you get up to Irazu (and/or Poas) volcano as early as you can before the clouds roll in and cover the views.
