Honeymoon August

We are planning our honeymmon for this summer and we are considering the following:
2 nights at the 4 Seasons, 5 nights at Cala Luna and 5 nights at Makanda. We this give us opportunity to do all the fun activites such as visit volcanoes, rainforest, etc...
We are very excited about going to Costa Rica but we are a bit nervous about the RAINY season. What kind of weather should we expect and will we be able to drive (we are planning on renting a 4x4)? Also, does the choices of hotels and locations make sense? We both love the outdoors and he is a surfer? We are open to any suggestions! Thanks!!!

Don't worry about the weather, it usually only rains in the late afternoon or evening and it's mostly the warm, misty kind that doesn't totally disrupt your day. There is really no bad time to visit CR! Driving is no problem, the roads are mostly paved although bumpy and narrow. I'm not sure where the hotels you mention are but there is good surfing north and south of Tamarindo, and south of Jaco in Playa Hermosa. I have heard there is some surf around Quepos as well. Congratulations and good luck on your trip!

jquinn, don't worry about the rain. We visited CR 3 times and all of our trips were in August. Rain is not an issue, especially in the northwest which tends to be drier than the rest of the country. We had plenty of days with lots of sun and no rain at all and some days with passing rain or storms in the evening or at night. The definite advantage to travelling in August is lack of crowds and how lush and green the flora is at that time of year.

As to your choices of destinations: you are basically spending all of your time in beach destinations. While there is nothing wrong with that in itself - we've done it and enjoyed it too - you will not have the opportunity to visit volcanoes from there. A day trip to Arenal from where you will be is not an option! Your 5 days at Makanda (which I hear is great) will give you a good opportunity to visit the rainforest and take a canopy tour if you want. But your 7 days up north (4 Seasons and Cala Luna) are in an area of dry tropical forest.

Are you flying to Liberia or San Jose? If you are flying to San Jose, why not shorten your 7 nights in the northwest to 5 and spend 2 days at Arenal?

As to surfing: there is some in Tamarindo (Playa Langosta and Playa Grande just south and north of Tamarindo are probably better than Tamarindo beach itself). There are also beautiful surfing beaches further south of Tamarindo: Avellana and Negra. They are not easy to get to but I heard there now may be a boat service from Tamarindo. I don't think there is good surfing in Manuel Antonio.

You will be able to drive to all your destination and, unless you change your plans, you won't even need a 4x4.

I agree with Iza. You should spend a couple days in Arenal, especially if flying through San Jose.
Personally, I'd make one other change. After spending a couple nights at the 4S Resort, you may perfer a smaller B&B ON the ocean, which Cala Luna is not. Check out Sueno Del Mar. Very romantic for honeymooners, right ON the beach, and I think a bit closer to town than Cala Luna. Makanda is the perfect choice for MA. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the feedback! I am considering cutting the Four Seasons and spend two nights in Arenal. the only reason why I had not included this is because I read that August is not the month for seeing the volcanoe. But we would enjoy everyhting else it has to offer.
So a few more questions, should we fly into Liberia or into San Jose from New York? Can anyone suggest a hotel in Arenal?
Thanks again for all of your help!
