I think you probably will love no matter where you pick! No one seems to have a negative opinion about their choice! But for us, we liked Portofino - some may think it was too remote - but it sort is the best of both worlds I think. It's on Ambergris, but away from the downtown area. It's north of the "cut" so you have to take a boat to get to San Pedro. It's almost like you're on your own little private island. They offer a free water taxi to San Pedro a few times a day, or if you catch it right, any of the excursion boats will seem to take you at no extra charge if they have room. Or there's the water taxi that you pay for, it's $10 I believe or you can get a weekly pass. We only used it once or twice because if we went snorkeling or diving, or on our Sunset Cruice we were already taken to San Pedro so we just walked around or had lunch or dinner then. If we wanted to eat at another resort, that resort would come get us and take us back at no charge. I loved being jetted around in the little boats! I'm such a water kind of girl!!!
We did do a package with Portofino as well - it included a couple of excursions - Mexico Rocks, a Sunset Cruise, transportation to and from the main land, breakfast daily, one full course dinner and maybe taxes? We didn't get all of our meals because we knew there'd be so many restaurants on Ambregris and there were.
I loved Ambregris, but I loved being able to take our boat back to our remote little island hideaway!
