Hiking in Costa Rica

Can anyone recommend a one or two night overnight backpacking trip for myself and my son. We are avid backpackers but have not been to Costa Rica before. We will be around the Manuel Antonio area and the ARenal area. Do we need to hire a guide?

I'd call or e-mail the folks at Desafio's Monteverde office. They booked all of our tours and I recall them having broschures in their office about backpacking trips. Bet they could at least point you in the right direction. I've e-mailed with Janet at [email protected] - You also could call them at 011-506-645-5874. FYI, their Web site is http://www.monteverdetours.com/

Or corcovado (go to that section of the soldeosa.com website and corcovado.org), of course, but that may be more $/time to get to than you want and requires planning. (To shorten travel at a price, could perhaps get a boat from Uvita to Sirena and hike out. Guide advised, so would work best if could meet up with a group and guide at Sirena.)

You want to fly and then camp, so if you don't know about alchohol stoves (trangia or like), they're worth looking into, even if not necessary for this trip.

Meant to add: Read/Post on Lonely Planet Thorn Tree too. More backpacker-oriented than this site.

Do you have your heart set on those two areas? I would go to the Osa/Corcovado area - much more untamed with amazing wildlife.

mlgb,

I think that depends on how you get there. The public bus from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez is less than $25, and there are some low cost, clean lodging in Puerto Jimenez around $15 per person. A ride on the collectivo to Carate is $8 and a day pass into the park is $10.

It all depends on the type of experience that you want. Of course if you want to spend 3 days in the park itself, it can be almost $500 per person, and if you want to fly it will be $100 each way. If you stay at someplace like Lapa Rios or BDC, you can expect to pay over $300 per night.

But spending this type of money is not necessary to have a simple and enjoyable time enjoying hiking and nature on the Osa Peninsula.
