Help with Bariloche itinerary

I will be visiting Bariloche in late December with my wife and 22 year old daughter for 3 days and 2 nights. I would love some help in knowing what are some of the best things to do in the Bariloche area. We would love to do an easy/modest hike or two. Any suggestions? Would we need a rental car to get around to get to hiking locations and better see the area?

We were there in January, 2008 with our 23 year old daughter. We stayed at the Hotel Milan where we had separate bedrooms but within the same "room". Good breakfast. As with all things in Argentina cash carries a discount. We took a city bus to Villa La Angostura and took the boat ride to Los Arrayanes National Park. You will like this. In Bariloche there is a mountaineering club with ideas and trips to many hiking points. We took a trip with them where they bus you out for about 2 hours to a large park from where we walked to a glacier. Very nice. It's been a year since I researched this but I believe you can also take public buses to various points around Bariloche town and hike from the bus stop. If you stay at the Hotel Milan, walk out the door and take a right to the corner, turn left and walk about 1 or 2 blocks to a great restaurant. I was glad I did not have a car in Bariloche since the town itself can be a little crowded. Enjoy. Are you going to be able to get to Torres Del Paine in Chile while you are down there? Maybe another trip. Adios

Hi Hoyas, while in Bariloche I looked from the outside at Hotel Milan , and said to myself this must be a reasonable well located hotel. Can you tell me then if you liked the rooms and a bit more regarding the hotel?

We stayed instead in Tres Reyes Hotel, which is located nearby and is one or two stars above the Milan. I have nothing but nice words for the Hotel Tres Reyes, being breakfast outstanding. Everything is home baked in the hotel, also the bar, is tiny and cozy and welcoming. The Tres Reyes is full of antiques in its lobby and some rooms have lovely lake views. At the time it was most reasonably priced.

To mrb77 any Travel Agency in town can sell you tickets for any of several fascinating trips in huge Catamarans with varied destinations, some with lunch in nice places in inside the islands or forests etc. The view is tremendous, all of them are very nice, and reasonably priced.
You can also take the catamaran-bus trip to Chile crossing the Andes called Cruce de Lagos. This, providing the weather helps you, is absolutely fantastic.
There is a very nice website for Cruce de Lagos.

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions. I am looking forward to our trip in December. I don't know if we will be able to get to Chile on this trip, but we will definitely work it in if we can.
