I've stayed a Victoria House and Chan Chich (several times) and have looked at Iguana Reef but haven't stayed there.

It's maybe 3 1/2 hours by car to Chan Chich via Orange Walk Town. The lodge will give you specific driving directions. It's a beautiful drive through remote areas of Programme for Belize and Gallon Jug lands, and you will likely see a lot of wildlife. If you are driving on Sunday, definitely gas up in Orange Walk as the one gas station in Blue Creek, a Mennonite area, is closed on Sundays. Chan Chich itself is terrific.

I personally prefer Budget for rental cars in Belize (they own a car dealership in Belize City and their vehicles are usually low mileage and in good shape, and the people are first-rate), but Crystal, Thrify, Hertz and others are good, too.

Victoria House is excellent. Nice accommodations (of varying types), nice beach, beautiful pool.

Iguana Reef is the best hotel on Caulker. Very nice rooms with A/C. It is not on the sea but on the backside.

--Lan Sluder

Must sees near Chan Chich: Mostly this is a place to see wildlife and birds. Barry Bowen's farm is interesting, and you can drive around it. You will probably want to make a trip, or stop off enroute, at Programme for Belize and La Milpa. Also, since you are in this area, you definitely should see Lamanai, and you might want to stay overnight at Lamanai Outpost (their nightspotting boat trip on the New River Lagoon and New River are great.)

On Caulker and Ambergris Caye, of course most of the activities are water-related. Definitely snorkel Hol Chan-Shark Ray Alley and also Mexico Rocks.

As far as places to eat:

Caulker: Habaneros, Rasta Pasta, The Sandbox, Cocoplum Gardens, Jolly Roger

Ambergris: Capricorn, Caliente, Papi's, Jam-Bel Jerk, Blue Water Grill, Elvi's, Jade Garden, Sweet Basil, Rendezvous, among others

--Lan Sluder
