Hananasi or Turtle Inn/Robert's Grove
My wife and I are planning a trip to Belize, 8 days/7 nights. We are not sure where to stay but have narrowed it down to Placencia or Hopkins, I dive she does't, we both love wildlife & hiking and hope to do both. Decent beach is a must. Appreciate any input. Also is it better to do a special package/all-inclusive or go a la carte?
Thanks

All three hotels are excellent. I've stayed at all three.
As between Hopkins and Placencia, it comes down to what you want. There's more to do in Placencia (though Placencia is hardly a big resort area), more hotels, more choices in restaurants, etc. Hopkins is closer to the highway and so it's easier to pop over to Cockscomb or go north or south. Beaches are similar, though Placencia's is much more extensive.

Just came back from that area. I have on word of advice: DEET. The sand flies are terrible there. From Placencia to Hopkins, tourists look like they've been attacked by sandflies and no-see-ems -- and they have. Nice beaches, but bad bugs -- those are my thoughts in a nutshell. Otherwise an extraordinary country -- loved the Cayo District.

Just got back from Robert's Grove. I would vote for Hopkins as hiking & wildlife are all quite a distance from Placencia by boat and/or car.
Robert's Grove was a nice place with a very good beach but we'll be going back to Costa Rica for beach & rainforest hiking. Also, we don't feel you get the most for your money in Belize.
The hurricane in 2001 has effected so much of the wildlife & vegetation. It is just starting to renew itself along the coast.

Just got back from a trip to Turtle Inn in December. It was absolute heaven! The beach is amazing. Got a few bug bites which are easily prevented with some bug spray. You can go to the Jaguar Preserve from there for hiking. My husband went diving while I went to the spa one day (since I don't dive.) Plus, they have complimentary bikes which you can ride into town if you want to go in for lunch. I highly recommend it!
