gas prices in Costa Rica

Between converting litres to gallons and colones to dollars, I have no idea what the price of gas is, but it's much higher than here in the US. Luckily, a friend let me use his car for 10 days, so I didn't have to rent. It was an Isuzu jeep-like thing, and it cost $100 to fill the tank! I drove it from San Jose to Londres, which is a small town outside of Quepos. I only drove the 20 minutes from Londres to Quepos and back about 6 or 7 times, then back to San Jose, and I spent about $240 on gas. Now I understand why private transportation is so expensive!

The price for a liter of regular gas in Costa Rica is about 520 colons (about $1) per liter.

There are 3.79 liters in a U.S. gallon so a gallon of gas is about $3.79.

That Izuzu you were driving probably needs a tune up or has a fuel leak. I drove 1500 km around Costa Rica this past month in a similar vehicle and only spent $140 on gas

That's what I was thinking, Sandy. We drove for a month in July and probably spent about $150, if that much. You can drive a LOT in CR, but not be using much gas since you are generally going fairly slow and taking a long time to go short distances. . .is it possible someone was stealing your gasoline?

Stealing my gas? This did cross my mind. Everything seemed fine w/ the first tank, but I was really surprised how fast the second tank disappeared. The road to Londres is in horrible shape -- just like the road from Quepos to Dominical -- so it could be possible that I knocked something loose while going back and forth over that road every day. Or maybe someone helped themselves to my gas tank...

Just wondering -- those of you who rented a car, did it come with a full tank of gas so you didn't have to buy the first tank?

Every time I've rented from Tricolor the car came with 1/4 tank and we were instructed to return it with the same amount
