Driving at night from Xcaret to Akumel?
I gather fron the forum that it is a big no-no to drive in Mexico at night, but what do you people think about the short drive between Xcaret and Akumel? I wouldn't want to pay the price of a tour, when we have our own car, but I do want to see the night show. Thanks!

Most of those responses about driving in Mexico are on less traveled roads where livestock or some other such objects might be in the roadway or where the roadway is very narrow with large trucks sharing the space. You will have no problem driving on 307 at night as it is a multi-lane highway and very well traveled.

Unless something has changed recently, it is a very safe highway. Well traveled, good condition, lined with mega resorts. You shouldn't have a problem at any time of day or night. Just keep your eyes open and be safe.

It is safe but take it easy. You never know where there might be a tope (speedbump) and they are not well lit. You will find them before entering a town (Tulum, Akumal) while you are in the town and as you exit. Take one of those babies going too fast and you're going to leave the bottom of your car there!

It is safe. In fact, I had never seen so many police as I saw on the night drive on 307 - flares and all. Do go the speed limit. Do watch out for topes. And do watch out for other 'stuff' in the road. I don't know what it was I hit, but it caused quite a jolt to the car.
