night driving
First trip to CR, and we are arriving around 7:30 pm in Liberia. We would like to rent a 4wd, but are a little worried about driving for the first time at night (to the Grand Papagayo/Allegro). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I would recommend having a transfer arranged and not driving at night. If you want a car, you can probably arrange for it to be delivered to the hotel the next day. While the roads between Liberia and Papagayo are generally fine, they would be rather confusing at night. Plus, the biggest issue with driving in CR is that the roads are used by all - people walking on the shoulders, slow moving vehicles, stray dogs and cattle ;-)

Driving at night is not a problem when you know where you are going and you drive safely, keeping your eyes out for people and animals. The problem is that most places don't have signs and it is easy to get lost and the roads can be tricky in the dark. Once you get familiar with where you are, no problem at all.

Night driving.....Don't. The main reason other than poor signs and animals is THE CRATOR SIZED POTHOLES. Some of the pot holes are so big you could do serious damage to your suspension. At night you can't see the pot holes until its too late.
