I LOVED Hacienda Baru. It's not a resort, though, by any stretch of the imagination. The tours/activities/guides were great, the cabins were comfortable, the restaurant was good, and the beach (hard to swim, I think) was beautiful.

Although we didn't stay at Hacienda Baru, I liked the sound of it, and we did do a hike with a guide on their reserve, which we enjoyed very much. Looked like a great property -- although, as previous poster said, not a "resort." Did you check out Pacific Edge? Don't know what your needs are but we loved it there. Fabulous setting on a ridge with what must be a 270 degree clear view of the coast. We saw whales from there. It's a small property with just 4 nicely done rustic cabins, a small pool, a lovely outdoor eating area, two lookout seating areas, and beautiful grounds. We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed Dominical alot. Did hike at Hacienda Baru as well as another reserve down there (forgot name), drove south on the great wide lovely paved road that has little traffic. Ate at a couple nice restaurants. Found lots to explore/enjoy there.

Haven't stayed at Pacific Edge, but have spoken with others who thought it was very nice. Also there have been good reviews on this board, I believe. So apparently they aren't cranky ALL the time! Wonder what's up with that?
