Do I really need the extra insurance coverage on a car rental in Mexico?

It's been 3 years since we last visited and rented a car, and I remember having this same question last time. I just can't remember the answer.

We always just rely on our credit card coverage when we rent in the US and abroad. Why do so many people think this is different in Mexico and we will need to spring for the CDW? Thanks.

Do you need the extra coverage? YES!

Also make sure you document fully and in the presence of the rental car dealer any and all signs of damage when you pick up the car.

If they find any additional damage when you drop it off you will have to pay the damages before you're are allowed to leave the country.

They won't care if you have CC coverage.

What I recall reading is that if it isn't clear what the insurance situation is, you can be thrown in jail until the mess is sorted out. Google a bit and I think you'll find some instances where this has happened to people relying on US credit card coverage.

Yes you need the extra insurance.

The credit card will only reimburses you when you get back to the US or wherever and submit a claim with police report and repair bill, etc.

Any damages must be paid in full before you can leave Mexico in case of any type of accident or damage to the car.

Worth it for the extra peace of mind, we always drive and have never had a problem other than a damaged bumper (hit a pothole down in Xcalak) that only cost us US$60 to rental car company.

Additional question: I thought I had a good rate on a rental, but no mention of this extra cverage: how much does it cost on average, and when does it get added to the bill?!

sylvia,

This is why many of us who rent cards down there go with some of the off airport smaller companies. They include all or most all of the insurance in the quote either on their web site or via email.

We have rented 3 times from Easyway and they include all costs except the zero deductible, which is about another US$15-20 per day extra.

Many others used Cancun Rent a Car, which includes all insurance costs including the zero deductible.

These companies are locally owned and off airport so you do not have to pay the extra 10-13% airport tax. Easyway also gives discounts for AAA and for paying cash. Not sure about discounts from Cancun Renta Car. My colleague was very happy with them this past June on a 10 day rental.
