Diving in Cozumel from Cancun?

I keep reading the BEST diving is Cozumel.
We are staying in Cacnun - are there dive shops that will take you to Cozumel from Cancun or do we have to make our way to Cozumel? Will Dive shops in PDC boat you out to the good spots from there?
Any suggestions to which dive operators would be helpful too!
Thanks if you can help!!!
Cindy

You can get to Cozumel by the ferry from Playa del Carmen or you can fly over for about $60 to $75 round trip.
The diving is MUCH better than anything you will find in the Cancun area.
It is truly world class.

The BEST diving is indeed in Cozumel. Most of the dive shops in Cancun will take you to Cozumel for a day of diving. We have used a couple of the diving folks in Cancun and were very disappointed both in the quality of their equipment and their professionalism. For the money, I think you would be better off going to PDC, taking the ferry and diving with the shops from Cozumel. You can get to PDC cheaply on the bus or you can rent a car for the day. The ferry is $7 one way and most of the dive operators in Cancun will pick you up at a pier close to the ferry dock. It's a full day's trip but well worth it IMO. In Cozumel, go with Papa Hogs, Dive Paradise or Living Underwater. All three are excellent dive operators and run small excursions not the cattle boats you get in Cancun and other places.

I will definately be back on the boards when I return - however its going to be a while! - We are not scheduled to leave until November! Planning is half the fun though.
I just looked up the ferry & some dive shop schedules - looks like a bus down and catch a ferry is doable without having to be there at 7:30am - lots of afternoon dives. Not sure about the buses yet - I'm sure it will be easy.
Thanks and any more tips on this would be appreciated!
Cindy
We did the same thing. Rented a car and drove to PDC, ferry to Cozumel and used Blue Bubble Dive Shop. Very enjoyable day.

We also did the trip with Aqua Tours from Cancun. The best thing I can say about it was the trip sucked.

If you have two and a half hours to spare each way, it is easy and inexpensive to get from any Cancun hotel to Cozumel. Just take a 15 to 20 minute ride on the R1 bus to downtown Cancun for 6 pesos. Then, grab one of the private shuttles (30 pesos one way) across from the main bus station or a bus to Playa del Carmen. The ride will take about 45 minutes. When you stop at Playa, it's a five minute walk to the ferry dock. The ferry will cost $15 (USD) roundtrip and it will take 40 minutes to cross from the mainland to Cozumel. Reverse your planning on return.

Cozumel is light years ahead of Cancun in terms of diving. There are many fine diving operators on Cancun. I would highly recommend Roberta's Eco Dive Cozumel, right next to the very tasty Ernesto's Fajitas.
