hi, I agree with JeanH...
I drove from Hotel Buena Vista in Alajuela(AWESOME STAFF/AWESOME PLACE)to the Arenal Observatory Lodge (AWESOME VIEWS) in Arenal and it took me over 3 hours. we stopped only once... Monteverde is a little further and is accessible by vehicle if you like roads with no shoulders and a lot of mud. I would not advise driving in Monteverde past June as a lot of the roads could be washed out due to wet season.
We rented a vehicle from Prego in Alajuela and it was about $53 dollars a day - a lot cheaper than most competitors, gas is about $2 per gallon. ask for Henry if you call Prego, he's nice.
buena suerte!! Laura and Scott Bartucca

Thanks Jean. Just got back from a trip to Calif. The time change has rattled my brain. I was thinking of Alajuela to San Jose.
The trip by public bus which you can catch near the airport is 4hrs to Monteverde and the bus drops you off right in the center of Santa Elena. I have not taken the public bus to Monteverde from the airport but I have taken it from Monteverde to the Airport. Other options would be to take the Fantasy Bus or Interbus they both have web sites you can look at. Monteverdeinfo.com has an airport shuttle I believe also.
