December honeymoon

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon for late December of this year. We're having trouble deciding if 2 weeks is too long to spend in Belize. Would anyone recommend splitting time between Belize and Costa Rica? Also, any recommendation re hotels in Belize. We're looking for "upscale" but not "break the bank" type of places. Romantic, somewhat private, but with lots of activity available. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to travel between the two countries, TACA is the only airline that flys between the two countries. But make sure first that you are not doing all that moving around and spending all that additional air to see the same sort of things. The two countries are certainly different enough to warrant visiting both, just decide it's worth the expense and effort. How long you stay here in the Belize depends on what activities and interests you have. There's enough variety on both the mainland and the coast to keep someone who is interested in diving/snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, ruins, culture, caving, horses, canoeing, birding and relaxing, entertained for two weeks. You'll have time to move around to 3 or 4 different areas and ecosystems and I'd think a few nights over the border in Guatemala visiting Tikal and the island village of Flores would be a nice easy add on.

So Katie, would you recommend Belize over Costa Rica. I've been to Costa Rica once before (although I really didn't see much of the country) and my fiance hasn't been to either. It sounds like Costa Rica has the better beaches?

Hi Jen:
Can't tell you anything about Belize but can suggest a few websites to check for honeymoons. If you are coming in late December there will be lots of activity as all the locals from inland head to the beaches and they are packed!!!! Something to keep in mind.

http://www.hotelgranodeoro.com/indexflash.html
MY FAVORITE _http://www.costa-rica-hotels-travel.com/
http://www.spanishdancercharters.com/
http://www.arenallodge.com/
http://www.ranchoarmadillo.com/
http://www.costa-rica-hotels-vacation.com/
http://www.hotelcapitansuizo.com/
http://www.hotel-california.com/
Good luck!
Michael

I think CR has the better beaches by far, but for diving and snorkleing, Belize is a superior offering due to the 190 mile reef and hundrds of miles of atoll and patch reef coral. For billfishing, CR would be the better choice. I've fished for tarpon/snook, etc in both and thought they were both great.

I'd say opt for Belize if the ruins, caving and using english is a plus. Both countries are magical, you'll be happy wherever you decide to honeymoon I'm sure.
