Dad's Birhtday Dinner in Playa
My family of 5 (three teens) are staying in Playa Del Carmen at Las Palapas this January for 6 nights. The object of our vacation is to celebrate my Husbands Birhtday. It is a big one and I am looking for a restaurant that we will enjoy together. We also need a restaurant that offers a decent amount of fish as we do not eat Chicken or Meat. Can anyone recommend a special place? This will need to be a Saturday night.

Is Las Palapas close to the 5th avenue or quinta avenida? This is a long strip that has shops and beautiful restaurants from Lebanese to Cuban restaurants. I am sorry I cannot help you with your especific question, but if no one else answers, know that you can walk the strip, and once in that great atmosphere with so much variety, you will be able to choose a great restaurant. Have a fantastic time!.

Las Palapas is at the north end of town and is close to 5th - only a block away. Yaxche is a wonderful restaurant with Mayan food, there is also Chicago Don Jose's, John Grey's and Blue Lobster. They are all walking south on 5th and then off on side streets. I eat more local so I can't tell you more about them other than they are on the pricey side but are well regarded. I did have my son's 21st birthday at Yaxche a few years ago and they did a great job for us and made it a bit unforgettable for him. They knew in advance it was his birthday. If you ask at the desk of Las Palapas they can give you specific walking directions to any of these restaurants or others. They're no more than a 10 min walk on 5th.

We really love La Pesca. It's not located on Fifth Avenue, but on 30th Avenue, so it's a little off the beaten path. We think it's the best seafood restaurant in town, and the prices are far more reasonable than those you'll find on Fifth. Antonio, the owner, worked at Blue Lobster for 10 years, so he knows his stuff. It's right across from the Mega supermarket on Constituyentes, so if you're sitting near the street, it's fun to watch the people go by. Further inside the restaurant is a nice waterfall. It's always cool inside Pesca, even when it's really hot outside.
Our favorite dish there is the shrimp casserole, or cazuela de camarones. La Pesca is one of our favorite restaurants in Playa and great for a special occasion.
Have fun, wherever you go!
