We are planning a Copper Canyon escorted trip for fall. Do we have to worry about safety? What about water safety? Should we pack water or will bottled water be available in the remote areas?

I haven't yet been to Copper Canyon, but it's on my list for next year. I do, however, live just north in San Carlos, Sonora -- and feel perfectly safe. You're probably stopping here as part of your tour (many tours do). I often drive between San Carlos and Tucson and don't feel any threat to my safety. So, no, I'd say that you don't have to worry about safety.

Though the Copper Canyon is remote, the hotels where your tour will undoubtedly be staying are upscale, so I'm sure that water won't be an issue. It's readily available in San Carlos and all towns before and after. You probably leave from Los Mochis which I've drive through, or El Fuerte -- and they both have stores with bottled water for sale. And the train has a dining car.

We felt very safe with our group.

We drank bottled water, which was readily available. Some hotels processed their own water, and our guides let us know where it was safe to drink.

...anyone travel Copper Canyon with AARP Tours? What can you tell me...size of groups, lodgings, guides, etc.? Planning on Copper Canyon trip in Feb or March...Muchas Gracias.

We stay in Alamos near Obregon. The Hacienda de los Santos is our 'home away from home' and they have a B&B next door with $99 room rates, pool, kids and pets welcome. Awesome fine boutique resort with everything you need including complimentary bottled water. Very safe to walk around town, too.

There is a small airport at Alamos, and the Hacienda owner is a pilot and can take you for an air tour of Copper Canyon. I highly recommend it!

Have fun on your trip. Gorgeous scenery. I hope you get the see the sacred Amapa trees in bloom.

we have proceeded to book a Copper Canyon trip for March 25th. AARP-recommended trip with GrandEuropeanTours and their Copper Canyon subcontractor. Begin, Phoenix, return Phoenix. Bus from Phoenix to San Carlos (Guaymas), one night, on to Alamos for one night and El Fuerte for one night prior to boarding the Copper Canyon train..two nights withn the canyon region, on to Casa Grandes for one night, back to Phoenix. Total eight days, cost $1625 p/p. I've driven worlwide for six decades and 70+ countries...we've been independent travelers all these years...now I'm looking forward to leaving the driving and planning to someone else, including the tour honcho, the bus drivers and the train engineer.
