Copacabana Palace Hotel Safety

Does anyone know how safe it is for an American to be staying at this hotel. I heard it is in a terrible area and that Copacabana beach is seedy. The hotel, however, looks (and I am sure is) fabulous.

Thanks,
Mark

My friend and I went to Rio several times while we were doing business in Brazil. We're both girls and we had a blast. We stayed down the beach at the Octon Rio and never had a problem.
The Copa Palace is so beautiful, as is Copacabana Beach.

Rio is what you make of it. If you are a smart(don't go out dripping in gold and diamonds), confident(keep that head up, shoulders back), and aware (know where you are at all the time) traveller, you will be fine.

ciao!
Snarla

The Copacabana Palace is a fine hotel, I just got back from 10 days in Rio. I stayed in Copacabana and I always do, never for 1 minute felt any danger, don't let people turn you into a scaddy cat.

Would you stay there over the Ceasar Park on Ipanema beach?

Hey Punani, I like your name. to all if you go to Rio you will just have the time of your life, don't worry about it, just be smart and cautious and try not to look like a gringoe and you will be fine.

I always have recomended the Debret hotel through the years but they always padded my bill a few bucks each time I stayed there but the last time I stayed there they put an 8 hour phone call on my bill which I didn't make for $150 and will not return me my money. They are crooks and stay there at your own risk.
