Hi Deb and Melisa,

Deb. I guess that all people are different but if you want a generalization of Colombian men I would be happy to give it. Respectful, formal, good taste, conversationalist, machista, unfaithful, bullshitters. I guess that could apply to any race but it was the first thing that came to mind in generalizing Colombian Men from a male perspective.

Melisa-Elliot basically gave you a list of the hotels in Barranquilla. One more call the Hotel Dann. None are that great and I would consider them all 3 stars. I recommend pay a little more for a suite if you can afford it. Barranquilla is a port city which is rather congested and dirty. It does have some nice neighborhoods. Try to get your friends to take you to Santa Marta or Cartegena.

Reggae searching person. I've never heard of this concert event and they usually publish this sort of stuff in the national paper. If I see it I will post.

Hi Ralph,

I am going to Bogota November 27 for about 7 days. I visited Bogota last January. And, Cali about two years ago. I found Bogota relatively safe, but I was always with a local. >>If you study at Javeriana, the Camino Real hotel accross the street offers a great discount.<< This trip I am staying near the hotel Los Andes Plaza, at the Excilier (sp?). A friend is making the reservation. Any thoughts on my trip?

Ralph, is it possible for us to communicate more privately?

Regards,

Michael

Hi Ralph. I am a 25 year old woman and an American. I am planning on visiting my friend who is living in Medellin (she is British) in February. She will be able to show me around but depending on how limited her works schedule is, I may have to explore on my own a bit. I would like to see more than just Medellin...is it safe for a 25 year old woman to travel around Colombia, where could I go, and what are the best ways to get there? Is there anything organized I could take advantage of, like short tours (ones that are active though, I would hate to be stuck on a bus)...I would like to see Cartagena and the coast but don't know if that is possible safety-wise.

Corin-I spent most of last February in Colombia-the place is a gem and security is better than most of the USA.
The warnings from your Govt about Colombia are based on ages old info and reflect a bunker mentality from the Cold War era.
However unless you speak/understand at least some Spanish you'll have a tough time on your own anywhere but Cartagena.
English is a rare language in Colombia-all university educated Colombians study English but few ever use it anywhere outside the classroom.
For excellent Colombia info go to www.poorbuthappy.com
Reading the old posts on the Forum there is a good way to find answers to your questions.

Hi Ralph. I'm planning to visit Cartagena sometime in November. My date of predilection is the first weekend that includes October 31, Hallowen day. Thinking that Halloween is kind of dangerous night wherever is celebrated I will like to know if Halloween is celebrated in Colombia and how it is celebrated. It is a safe night to go out or it is just like any other night?

michael- you are speaking of the belvadere hotel which is between the andes plaza and the bogota plaza. it is a dump!

the bogota plaza is a great hotel, good food and amenities. they will ask about $130/nite. you can get it for half. it has a sauna, massause, 2 free buffets for breakfast included.

two alternatives are andes apart/hotel suites and a small hotel with a french name LE MANOIR, both about 2 blocks away across from a park. price about $50 -60/nite. there are a lot of great restaurants in that neiborhood.

Ralph,
My son has to plan a formal dinner menu for a fictational state dinner in Columbia for a geography project. He has looked up menus from Columbian Restaurants but do you have any suggestions regarding hors d'oeuvres. a main course, a dessert, and beverages that might be served at a formal dinner? Thanks to anyone who can help!

Perhaps someone will have answers for you, but did you notice that this thread is three years old? You might want to start a new one with your question.
