car rental in CR: call or online?

Any good experiences with a particular car rental company?

Did you book the car online or over the phone (or once you got there...we'll be there during high season, so I'm afraid not to reserve it in advance).

Also, should we get a 4x4 because of the roads even if there are only 2 of us, or would an economy car suffice? We're driving San Jose>Manuel Antonio>Arenal>Monterverde>San Jose.

Thanks everyone!

Dear Soniela,
I always find dollar rent a car to be the cheapest (www.dollar.com), also Shillmac mentioned in another post that Ivan Segura from the local dollar office in Costa Rica gave her even better quotes than online, and you can write him directly at: [email protected]. Good Lick!
And, since you are going to Monteverde as well, I would recommend a 4x4, otherwise, you can easily do with a regular car.
Feel free to write me directly for any more info.
Pura Vida,

To costaricafinca...if you're still here...can you tell me how Dollar operates in CR? Do they meet you at the airport? Do they bring the car to the airport, or do you have to go to their office to pick up the car? And where is their office located? Do you have to go all the way into San Jose to get the car?
Thanks!

Thank you! I'll email him.

Good question...is the dollar rental close enough to the airport so that it would be easy to get the car after landing?

They have an office in the airport right next to the airport exit door. You show up there and they will call someone to come pick you up. Their actual location is about a 2 minute drive from the airport. No, you DO NOT have to go into San Jose. It is all very expedient. It takes about 30 minutes once they pick you up at the airport to drive you to the main airport office, handle the paperwork, and you are ON YOUR WAY!

Anyone have experience with National Rental Car ?? Are they at the San Jose airport?
We are staying our first night at the airport - Hampton Inn Suites (reg room - confirmed as suites not available) also there on our last night of vacation. As no one speaks about National Rental I tht I better ask ..
we have a 4 x4 reserved.
