Capricorn Resort - Ambergris
Has anyone stayed at Capricorn Resort, just north of San Pedro? Is it nice? I know there's only 3 units and a very good restaurant, but is it a hassle to get to San Pedro? We want some seclusion, but we also want to be close enough to town to go when we want. Do we cross a river or something to get to town? This is my first time. Have been looking at Victoria House and Xanadu, but not sure if I'll like their locations. Any info is appreciated!
Thanks!

The restaurants is quite good, but the rooms are too close to the restaurant and bar, which can be noisy, as bars tend to be. ACross the cut and accessible by boat or golf cart. VH and Xanadu are both fine choices, VH one of the best inns on the island and Xanadu is a great condo for people who do not like condos. My clients have been incredibly happy at both. For more seclusion across the cut, Portofino and Mata Chica.

Thanks Katie! What are your thoughts
on Portofino and Mata Chica? Is Portofino too far away (meaning, is 15 minutes a difficult 15 minutes over unpaved roads and the cut or an easy ride)? Is Mata Chica closer? They both look nice, but is one better than the other? Thank you so much!

Personally I think that unless you are way, way far north like at Salamander it doesn't make all that much difference whether you're 3 miles or so north as at Capricorn or 4 or 5 miles north. It's still a boat ride either way -- most people are not going to bike or take a golf cart back and forth, as it's too far and too bumpy, plus you do have to cross the river channel on a hand-pulled ferry.
Portofino is a little north of Mata Chica, but they're both in the same general area.
If you want to go into town frequently, you need to be south of town. Both Victoria House and Xanadu are excellent. Banana Beach is also good and has tons of fans. Banyan Bay is terrific if you need two bedrooms.

Capricorn Resort like the resort we stayed at is north of the channel separating San Pedro with the northern part of Ambergris Caye. To cross the channel there is a flat barge pulled by a rope big enought for four (4) golf carts. The ferry only operates until 8:00pm and the cost is 10 Belizian Dollars Round Trip. Capricorn's Restaurant was great. Make sure to make reservations.
