Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta?

We would like to use Marriott points for a (1st) trip to Mexico. Having never been there, we can't decide if we should choose the JW Marriott in Cancun OR the CasaMagna Marriott in PVR. Both properties look lovely. I don't know how the two towns compare! Any suggestions?

Casa Magna Marriott is lovely. How the two towns compare?

Puerto Vallarta is a real city. It started as a fishing village, then tourists discovered it back in the 60's (Night of the Iguana). It has a population of about 1/4 million people. And is has a vibrant diversity of local people and visitors.

Cancun is a man-made destination, set up by the government to draw tourists.

The ocean is nicer on the Cancun side (being the Caribbean) but everything else about PV is better (in my humble opinion, and with the disclaimer I've been to Vallarta 19 trips and never to Cancun). suerte, Suze

We've been to Cancun twice and PV once. Been to the Yucatan Peninsula 9 times. (the area around Cancun)

What are you looking for in a vacation? The Canucn area has many things to see and do off property. Mayan Riuns, cenote swimming, eco parks, caves, etc. Cancun also has Aqua World. http://www.aquaworld.com.mx/cancun-tours.htm You can do jet ski/aqua boat jungle tours, sub-sea submarine, snorkeling, etc. You can also take day trips over to Cozumel or Isla Mujeres. There is a very nice water side mall call La Isla shopping center. There is a small aquarium there. Good food and shopping. The bus system is convenient and inexpensive. The water clarity and beaches are very nice. Cancun has completed a multi-million dollar beach renovation due to all the damage hurricanes have done over the years. I agree, Cancun is more built up and touristy than PV, but we like it.

Not sure where the Marriott is located in PV. We found the topography to be a lot like Jamaica (if that means anything to you). Lots of mountians, riverbeds, and water falls. The beach and water clarity are quite inferior compared to Cancun. We stayed in the Romanic area and it was close to everything. We walked to shopping and resturants. We caught a cab to the Marina for boat trips. We found the locals to be much more aggressive with timeshares and selling wares than in Cancun. We really liked to town of PV, but their lack of really nice beaches and great snorkeling like in the Cancun area was a big minus for us.

If your interested, we have all our trips posted. Maybe seeing both areas will help with your decision:

Neither! Playa del Carmen. It is a nice mix of culture, beautiful beaches and shopping and it is not overbearing like Cancun. It has more of a bohemian chic feel to it. If you are looking for an all-inclusive, I highly recommend Hacienda Tres Rio Nature Park and Spa. www.haciendatresrios.com

The Casa Magna Marriott in Puerto Vallarta is located in "The Marina" district.

I would have suggested the Playa del Carmen/Riviera Maya area also, but they specifically stated they wanted a Marriott to use points. No, there is not a Marriott in that area.
