My husband and I went to Cancun last year mainly because it was a quick getaway from Missouri (we were on the beach within 2.5 hours after takeoff!) and because friends had said we should try it.
I thought Cancun would be this seedy, spring break type place, trashy, all- inclusive hotels, etc. It was quite the contrary.
We stayed on the concierge level of the Fiesta Americana Grande Coral Beach. It was absolutely amazing! The beach was gorgeous, the hotel was 1st class, the food was wonderful, the people were professional and friendly.
We hired a taxi that picked us up at the hotel and took us to Tulum for the day. Absolutely gorgeous, plenty of ruins for even the biggest ruin specialist!
We also spent a day on Isla Mujeres, which was really special because you take the ferry out there, the trip is beautiful going and coming, and the island allows you to see a bit of what I'd call rural Mexico. We rented a golf cart and traveled all over the tiny island, ate at a neat little restaurant on the street (it was next to the real estate company of the island if you want to try it). And don't forget the little cemetery. Amazing. Then we sat on the beach under a little pavilion and drank beer while we listened to 4 locals laugh and talk about the previous day's local election.
Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach is rated #1, rather expensive, but if you want to do it right, wow!
We have friends who have done Cancun super cheap, but we just decided to do it right, and it was first-class, beautiful, and I would go back there in a New York second!
And speaking of New York, I want to go back there, too....

nona, it's nice to not be the only one on the board who loves Cancun, lol! It depends a lot, I think on the location and quality of hotel you choose, like any city.
have a great time, Dotska! Look forward to a report!
