Buenos Aires - Civil Unrest

We are planning a trip to So. America in January, ending in Buenos Aires. I am concerned about the civil unrest I have been reading about lately. Is this overblown by the media, or should we consider skipping BA on this trip and return at a more calm time? I am not concerned about petty crime such as pickpocketing, but it seems like things are getting pretty shakey there.
The president resigned, and the state of siege is lasting one month, meaning that anyone can be arrested, including you, shall the Argentinean authorites guess that you are suspicious.

A friend of mine, who had a trip planned, and had already paid for it, called the hotel in BA and they told him not to come. Things seem pretty messed up there. Yesterday, 5 died, and 20 were seriously injured in BA. I would wait at least a month to see if things calmed down, or would skip B. Aires.

Read the news at:

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/2001...entina_dc.html

Thank you for your response. I agree with you - but my husband is disappointed we will miss BA on this trip. I just don't see the need to take a chance. Decision made!

In fact, things seem to have changed a little ( to the better) today, the state of siege was suspended, and the Senate President took the Presidence over, after De La Rua resignation. The streets are calmer than they were for the last two days.

However, since B. Aires is a beautiful city, I'd wait for a better time to visit, when the city can be enjoyed as it deserves. The situation will be a little unstable for quite a while.

Regards,

S

I am currently in BA and having a fantastic time. Although there are problems and I am being a little bit more cautious there is no reason not to visit.
