Birdwatching in Honduras

My husband and I will be in Honduras for 12 days the end of November. He is interested in birdwatching. Right now we're thinking of Copan first, then Tela, and La Ceiba. Any recommendations for a birdwatching guide for any of those areas? Please let us know how to reach any English speaking "experts." Thanks.

For the Copan area check the Birdwatching section at Honduras Tips Magazine at http://www.honduras.com/hondurastips...ipsincopan.htm

I believe that Robert Gallardo who is mentioned there has led some international groups around the country and perhaps he could suggest guides for Copan and in your other locals of interest.

For the La Ceiba area you may want to contact the Lodge at Pico Bonito as well. They have a resident biologist, James Adams, who may be able to make some recommendations. On the web at http://www.picobonito.com/

If you have the time you may also want to take a look at the Lake Yojoa area. You will find more information at Honduras Tips.

Enjoy Honduras!

I should have mentioned also that the Lodge at Pico Bonito outside La Ceiba is a great place to stay. From their veranda at lunch you should be able to pick up 20 to 30 different bird species dropping by to watch you.

I'm going to Copan for a week at the end of November and in my research have read the same name both in the Moon Guidebook and in hopefulist's Copan travelogue; I think it's Jorge Barraza. He leads birding hikes in the area and hopefulist said he's great. I think she's in Guatemala now, but she might chime in when she returns.

Have fun--and maybe we'll see you in Copan!

I don't know as much about the region as Charlie, but I did stay at the Lodge at Pico Bonito in May and it was spectacular. I loved both the structure and the grounds. The Lodge has a daily morning bird tour that is supposed to be great, and I understand there is also a river trip that encounters a ton of wildlife, including birds. I believe it is guided by a naturalist.
