Best (and economical) way to see Tulum?

We want to see Tulum for 1/2 day or a whole day if we can snorkel and stuff there. What is the best way to accomplish this??? I see tours that are around $70/person. I haven't been to Cancun for 10 years but I think the prices have gotten pretty darn high!

If you just want to see the ruins - it will take you about 3 hours to tour. No snorkling in the immediate area - Tulum is known for it's sandy beaches. You need to look for rocky, coral, seagrassy beaches for snorkling.

You should get some maps from cancmap.com - they will tell you the best way to get to Tulum from Cancun.

We have only ever rented a car from the airport and driven to Tulum - where we stay.

If the reef out from the beach near Tulum survived the hurricanes there should be some good snorkling 1/4 mile out. I've swam it years ago but it would be better to hire a boat. At the time I was there there was wonderful large deer, elkhorn, brain corals as well as many fish, lobster, crabs, eel, etc. The bus is very economical.

Collectivo (40 pesos each) or bus to ruins. Ruins admission is about 35 pesos each. You can hire a private guide at the ruins for about 200 pesos. Go early and stop at Casa Cenote - www.casacenote.com for lunch on the way back. Do some snorkelling there. An alternative would be La Buena Vida in Akumal for lunch and snorkeling.
