Barcelo Maya?? Mayan Riviera
I've seen this resort advertized numerous times with very good prices for a week. I'm wondering what's up. Why do I see this resort for such a good price on every travel site? Is something wrong with it? Is there construction or something going on? Anyone know?? Thank you in advance.

We were there Feb '03 and at that time there wasn't any construction but I don't know about now. It's a very nice resort, quite large and spread out. The beach is one of the best around. The only drawback I could think of is that it's not very close to a decent town (like PDC, about a 20 muinute ride away). The closest town is Puerto Adventuras which really isn't much of a town at all, more of a man made tourist town, not a true Mexican town.
There was never a problem getting a shaded lounge chair at the pool or beach, the food is par with other AIs I've been too (lots of variety, not bad but not great), there were lots of activities, although the only one in my family that partook in them was my son. The grounds are nicely maintained and landscaped. The tennis and basketball courts seemed to always be available (which was a big plus with my son and husband). Some people complain that it's so spread out, that there's lots of walking to get from the pool to the hotel room to the dining room, etc. That doesn't bother us, we live in NYC and are very used to doing a lot of walking.

I just took a visit to tripadvisor and I'm not wanting to offend anyone, but is seems to me that most of the complaints are from Americans. Not all, but most. The complaints seem to be over the service and the fact that most of the guests are European. I've been to many resorts where the main clientele are European and it doesn't bother me at all. I don't care if most of the staff does not speak english fluently. I'm in Mexico so I don't expect Mexicans to speak another language other than their own fluently. It seems to me that those complaining want their drink etc yesterday and are not willing to wait a few minutes. Also, in most tropical countries there are bugs and damp odours. You can't get around this for the most part. Most of the reviews were very good and most thought it was a great resort. The thing is - you can't please everyone, no matter what. Someone is always going to have their nose out of joint when spending $$$.

We were at Barcelo last Christmas with our family of 10. It was not cheap at Christmas, but that is to be expected. We are from SD and MN, ages 10-64, and go to a different location every year (Puerto Vallarta this Christmas, but not AI). We loved Barcelo. The beach is wonderful and the snorkeling from the pier was much, much better than expected. We thought the food was some of the best we have had at an AI. Never had a problem getting a chair anytime during the day even though the resort was full. I would suggest if you don't want to hear the disco music at night ask for a room in building 1-3. The only problem we had was when they gave us a room with a king bed for two adults and two children. They were not very concerned about finding a solution for us. We also were at the front desk when someone was reporting a watch stolen from their rooms. Yes, people complained about the wait for drinks, etc, but as you said you can't please everyone. We like to try different places each year, but I think the grandchildren would go back in a minute. Any questions, just ask. I understand construction has started on more units. Owa

When we were there, there wasn't any waitress service at the pool or beach. Wine, beer, soft drinks and Taquilla were self serve. Other drinks, you had to go to the bar where sometimes there was a line. We aren't big drinkers, so we really didn't care.
