Varig Airlines owns a few hotels in Brazil, so I am assuming that they booked you with one of their hotels.
To the best of my knowledge they are all good hotels. I once booked a hotel with them in Iguassu Falls and it was
excellent. Copacabana is a nice area,
not as good as Leblon or Ipanema but
probably less expensive. I never heard about this hotel specifically, I lived
in Rio for a long time, the only thing I can think is that it is a newer hotel or another hotel which changed names.
Larry

This looks like a good hotel new and everything. Since it is off Ave. Atlantica be carefull at night if you walk home. As a matter of fact don't walk home, take a taxi straight to your hotel to be sure and safe. Not that Rio is that bad if you stay and walk in open lighted areas but if you walk in the back streets at night you are inviting trouble.

Not one of my favorite hotels and location. You can do better. Check out www.blameitonrio4travel.com They have a lot of great information.
Regarding one of the above responses - Not necessarily true - Just because you booked a tour with Varig Vacations does not mean that they own Augusto's Copacabana. Varig Airlines only owns the Tropical Chain of Hotels. I am sure that they do not own Augusto's.

It might be wiser to book a hotel in Ipanema if it is your first visit. Ipanema is a little more tourist-friendly. Either way, enjoy Rio, it is a great place to spend your vacation.
Jill
