Advice: Rental Car for Merida and Yucatán
Advice needed please: We have a trip scheduled for Merida and Chitzen Itza. What is a good, reputable rental car company? I see a lot of very cheap deals on carental.com and kayak.com, but these seem so cheap as to make me question the validity.
We plan on spending on first couple days in Merida, so we would only need a car for about three days. The plan is to drive from Merida to Chitzen Itza, and additionally explore some cenotes in between. Any advice or "must see" suggestions are welcomed please.
Dates July 27-31

Those 6$/day rates do not include adequate insurance. On carrentals they do include $750,000 mxn liability but that's peanuts and far under the minimum you'd want. It's only & 44,000 US. You'll want liability in the millions of pesos. I have $8,000,000 liability coverage for my personal vehicle here in Mexico. Your US liability is not valid in Mexico. You'll likewise not want to depend on your credit card for collision etc. I mean, you can, but you'd be expected to pay for any damages out of pocket before you leave the country and then hash it out with your card carrier and hope you have all the paperwork they require when you get home. Plus the agency will put a hold on your card, maybe up to several thousand. Dollars. Keep in mind that in the event of an accident, you also must stay on site with the cops until the insurance guy arrives. So, it makes sense to try to rent with a local agent. Easyway has been mentioned here as a reliable local agency, with agents in Merida & Cancún. Which is useful if you need to do a 1 way rental. I've not used them personally, but have experience with the rest of what I posted. You'll probably end up paying $40-$50 US/day with adequate insurance depending on the vehicle.
All that said, travel by car is a great way to experience Mexico. I think the added expense is well worth it.

OR, you could hire a private driver. Prices in Merida are refreshingly inexpensive as compared to other cities.......if you want a name, I will offer that of the man we used to take us to the cenotes and a wonderful restaurant about 40 minutes out of Merida...speaks perfect English.

Trip update: We ended up renting with EasyWay in Merida. Easy to work with and fairly reasonable rates. The insurance was 4x the actual cost of the daily rental, but that still wasn't unreasonable. We did end up getting a flat tire out towards Chichen Itza, and we ended up driving back to Merida on the temporary tire, but we made it. Thanks again for the suggestions and advice everyone!
