Julia, my guidebook lists the more affordable places in that area as being in La Fortuna, the town closest to the volcano. I can't recommend one in particular myself, as I have not stayed there, but I think this area is the best bet for your budget.

Julia,
We stayed at Luigi's Lodge in La Fortuna. If memory serves, we paid about $60 per night for 3 people. The rooms are not fancy, but they were clean and had TVs, hairdyers and bathtubs (a rarity). They also have a decent restaurant, pool, jacuzzi and exercise room. Our room had a nice view of the volcano, although the lava flow is on the other side toward Tabacon. My favorite thing about Luigi's is the family that runs it - very gracious and friendly people who treat you like family.

The Hotel San Bosco in La Fortuna is also inexpensive and it looked nice from the outside (we didn't stay there).

Have a great trip!

Thanks, Iza.

The one you recommended is where we will stay, though it seems their cancellation or reservation-change policy is very strict. We're trying to see if we can avoid reservations, though it is at Xmas time, so don't know if that's possible. Thank you for suggestion!

Hi Julia,

well it depends on when you go....we are going to CR in March of 2003 and absolutely everything is full in the Arenal area except for La Casona (or possibly some other out of the way place) at the Arenal Observatory Lodge which is a refurbished farmhouse. It's $67 including taxes, but nothing fancy and you share two bathrooms between up to 10 guests.........good luck
