2 1/2 Weeks On a budget travel ideas
My boyfriend and I and another younger couple (20s) are looking for great ideas for places to stay on a budget ($40-50/night/person). We're definitely staying in Placencia for a week and have accomodations already. We would like to stay at one of the Cayes (Tobacco??), head south to the border of Guatemala/Garifuna region (??) and possibly some ruins along the way.
Basic, BASIC accomodations are OK as long as there's a toilet and it's clean.
Also, any ideas of other forum that might suit the "budget" traveler better?

I stayed at http://www.glovers.com.bz/ for a week a couple of years ago and thought it was very nice. It was clean had good snorkling and was very rustic. It's 45 miles off the coast so the stays are for 1 week which can be a bit long to be on an island.

I'd suggest spending some time on the www.toucantrail.com web site. It's a service of the Belize Tourist Board, but focuses on hotels with rates under US$60 double. I recently met the young woman, Cindy Blount, who does the web site -- she's very knowledgeable and the web site is terrific, with all kinds of information in addition to loding information.

We had a blast at Glover's Atoll Resort - it was perfect for us: great folks, beautiful beaches, world class diving and snorkeling from shore, great base for flyfishing and kayaking. It is VERY rustic, so not for everyone - they really shouldn't use the word "resort" in their name. Withatwist - you apparently stayed somewhere else, so why the strong words against GAR?

We loved everything we did in Belize and the 5 of us averaged about $20/day per person over nearly a month, not counting airfare (which we didn't pay because of our mileage plan). Here's our travelogue; let me know if I can answer questions:

You shouldn't skip Caye Caulker. Very friendly place where the locals party with the tourists. Good nightlife and lots of cheap hotels and hostels. I remember it being about $15 night a couple years ago. Beautiful place. When it gets to hot hang out at the split which is shaded and you can jump in the water when you need to. Fun place!
