Zugspitze help please!

Which town is better to get to Zugspitze, Ehrwald (Austria) or Garmisch (Germany)?? It seems that each of these two towns have their own cable cars to transport people up the mountain, can we take the cable car up from one town and down the other? Is there a combi-ticket that has such offers? I think the Austrian page has some info on this but I cannot understand German:

http://www.zugspitze.at/zugspitze.com/preise2.htm

Thanks for any help!

Yes, you are right. The site you mention details a "Gatterl"-ticket which allows you to go up from the Austrian side (Ehrwald) and down on the German side, plus other activities.

If you want to know more details post here again.

This is what we did:

Getting an early start - so as to have the mountain to ourselves (Ha!) - we went up via cable car from the parking place at Eibsee, which is past Grainau, Germany.

After our picnic lunch at the top, we descended and then took a relaxing 2-hour hike around the pretty Eibsee (lake). The Zugspitze was most always in view as we did that and it was, of course, very scenic.

A successful and memorable day!

BTW - Ehrwald and Garmisch, although close to one another on a map, are physically quite distant from each other.

Thanks harzer & TuckH for your replies! We are in a dilemma because we will be going from Innsbruck and are wondering which town we should alight to take the ride up. Most people mentioned about Garmisch and how beautiful it is but not much have been said about Ehrwald.

harzer, can you elaborate what the "Gatterl"-ticket offer? We thought it would be interesting to include both towns in our daytrip. I am now praying for good weather during our time there when we go in May, cos it's really expensive!

akiace - If the weather is not right, forget the idea! Also, going from Innsbruck to Garmisch, you should find time to visit Mittenwald. We spent 6 days and nights in the beautiful Leutaschtal above Mittenwald...
