Zermatt to Venice train-Lunch question

We are taking the train leaving at 7:30am to venice. There is a 35-40 minute stop in Brig.
Also a "restaurant" on the train.

Re lunch- Grab a sandwitch in Brig?, will the cafe's have them available at 9:30am?
Eat in the restaurant? Buy picnic items, the day befre as stores may not be open at 7am?

At Brig Station, when you get out of the main exit, there is a convenience store + bakery type of shop on your left still inside the station bulding. There you can buy fresh bread, sandwiches, sweets and drinks. On the dining car, you can have cold and hot items, that is obviously much more costly than just grab a sandwich. 9h00 am no problem. I cannot remember exactly but I think they have refrigerated food items too (like ham, etc).

Hi RobertR,

In my experience on Swiss and German trains, the on-board Bistro serves not much more than sandwiches, of course at a high price. Not sure if that will be the same for trains heading into Italy though.

If it were me, I would get a lot of stuff for a picnic the day before -- meats, hams, cheeses, yogurts (don't forget to ask about spoons), chocolates, and a nice wine.

Then, at breakfast, ask your hotel if you can take some of their fresh breads with you. Or -- buy the bread when you're at Brig. There is a lovely gourmet grocers inside the Brig station (I was just there for three nights) tucked into the corner by the front. However, it is always jam-packed. You should be able to get some fresh bread quickly, but selecting and paying for sandwiches, chocolates, etc, might take some time.

Have fun, enjoy the ride!

Sounds like Swan is talking about the same shop I mentioned. Always jam packed? Depending on the time. A few times I was there, every time it was Sunday early evening, I did not have a long wait.

Swiss - Italy (Geneva - Venice direct) I took a few times did have hotmeal service that's what I wrote above.

I'd be surprised if it WASN'T open....there will be plenty of fott traffic in the Brig station at that time of day so no worries.

Yes, kappa1, sounds like exactly the same one. It was August, of course, and Brig was more crowded than I remembered it being -- lots of folks on Bahnhofstrasse and of course in the train station. That may account for the crowds I saw in the store.

Yes, RobertR, it will be open at 9 am. It was even open on Sunday!
