How's the coffee/breakfast on Italian Eurostar trains?

We are travelling second class on several ES trains in June. Our first train leaves Venice at the ungodly early hour of 6:30am. Not sure if we will have time for breakfast at the apartment in Venice. Wondering if there will be a long line for coffee/food in the train's restaurant car? Is it a good idea to pack some food rather than buy on the train? I imagine prices are high on the train.

At 6:30 in the morning, I'll pay anything for a cup of coffee.

The coffee at coffee bars inside the station is better than the coffee you get on the train.

Food prices on the trains are not all that much higher than food prices in the station. Your choices, apart from coffee, are likely to be very limited on the train. (In fact, you may not get a restaurant car, just a cart rolling up the aisles at that hour of the morning.

If breakfast (beyond coffee and a biscuit) is important to you, pack a breakfast the night before you leave your apartment. It's what Italians traditionally did anyway -- bring their own food onto the trains.

hi, mary,

there are lots of nice delis in Venice which would pout together a breakfast picnic for you for teh next day - it might be a bit of a risk to buy it in the morning.

don't know about drinks though - i wouldn't bet on something being open at the station.

i just googled the station - there is a bar restaurant on the right -hand side of the building but unfortunately there's no indication of what times it opens, even though there's a space for that on the site.

you could get up early teh moring before and go and investigate!

regards, ann

Yes, take your own breakfast! Some bars at the stations open as early as 6h00. If nothing is open, you can still buy your coffee on the train. But as others suggested - for a better selection, take your own food.
