Zermatt, Coeur des Alpes and/or Sass Fee?

We have stayed at Coeur des Alpes and highly praise our stay there! You will be delighted with the hotel. They will pick you up from the train, free of charge, and welcome you to their small hotel with a free drink outside on couches which have a magical view of the Matterhorn. You are able to stay there and just chat for awhile. If the weather is good it's a wonderful place to relax with a drink. The rooms are so comfortable, with many special touches. You will love them! The owners treat you like family. They spend time getting to know you. Breakfast, included, is excellent. The spa, wow, so relaxing. You can see the pool area below the reception area, through a glass floor. It's exceptional. There is also a fireplace in the center of the glass floor, with seating around it. You approach the small hotel through a tunnel through the rock. Coeur des Alpes was the best hotel we stayed at on our trip to Italy and Switzerland last year. Our only problem with Zermatt are the prices for dinner. But that's a problem in all of Switzerland. The hiking in the area is wonderful. Have a wonderful trip!

I'd vote for Zermatt over Saas Fee. We've done a fair amount of hiking in both. In a way the hiking around Saas Fee had more "variety", but the town and the atmosphere can't begin to compare to Zermatt in my opinion. And you can't see the Matterhorn from Saas Fee!

Thank you, Images. I had heard of the Coeur des Alpes and in part would go to Zermatt specifically to stay there and treat my family. Would we have any difficulty in getting a triple room? I don't mean the reservation, just can the larger double rooms be set up to accomodate a family of three? Their price list doesn't give an "extra person in room" charge.
Did you find the dinner prices in Zermatt significantly higher than elsewhere in Switzerland? When we are not taking half-board at our hotel, we are accustomed to paying 25 to 30 CHF for a dinner entree---is this out of line for Zermatt? Also, do you recommend any particular hikes there? I have all the guidebooks and maps, but personal recommendations are always nice too.

I stayed at Coers Des Alps last October and can only confirm the comments above. We loved it, the rooms are well appointed, beautifully clean and comfortable. we had the penthouse room, which is incredible. A full view of the Matterhorn from bed, wood fire, flat screen TV, a real treat. Breakfast is great, the staff very welcoming and helpful, you will have a great time.

We stayed in their smallest room, which was perfect for 2 people, but I don't think you could put 3 people in it. The other rooms were much larger. They are so friendly there, just email them as ask what they recommend.
We found the food there about the same as the rest of Switzerland. The whole country is just so expensive. We sometimes just bought picnic supplies at the coop store and did dinner and lunch that way. It evened out our food costs. The coop store gets very busy and actually sells out of suitable dinner food. You need to buy it early because they close around 7 p.m. There is also a McDonald's if you get desperate, although the hamburgers are $5 or $6 each.
I can't remember if I had hikes chosen ahead of time. The TI will have maps of trails though. There are alot of options, and it was so beautiful. It rained some also so don't forget rain gear. I hope you have clear weather. When it fogs in you can't see the Matterhorn at all
. This happened to us on our last day.
There is also an excellent walk of Zermatt, given by a guide from the TI. She was excellent. Get information about this from the TI, where to meet and when. It's free but there must be at least 5 or 6 people show up.
Don't miss walking through the cemetary where many are buried that fell on their climb of the Matterhorn. It's really touching. So many young people lost their lifes. Many on the desent. You'll have a wonderful trip!
