I have had great advise regaarding aspects of a planned trip tocroatia. Can someone suggests higlights for a day or more in zagreb, taking for granted will be concentrating in the city center for the most part.

I don't know if anyone else would describe it this way byt for me there are sort of three towns in the center. At the top of the hill is Administrative Zagreb, with government buildings of various sorts and ages, many quite picturesque and good views out over the city.

In the middle is the Stari Grad, the old city, comprising several markets, the cathedral, churches, shrines etc.

On the flats between that area and the station is the Hapsburg city, with large townhouses, tree lined streets and museums. The station itself and the hotel next door are both classic Hapsburg and look a lot like pictures of Austria, with good reason. They built it.

Shopping and banks I remember being mostly in the central zone, but we ate happily in all three.

Further out from the center, esp toward the airport are large areas of Communist era blocks of flats. Educational but not attractive.

We were in Zabreb for 2 days in Sept., 2010. It's a very easy city to get around, either walking or taking the trolley. There is a funicular up the hill to the upper city. Up there, St. Mark's Church has a beautiful roof,the Zagreb History Museum is interesting, and our favorite was the Museum of Naive Art, a small and lovely museum. There is a wonderful market going down the hill. We had dinner at Vinodol, which was very good. It's quite popular, so it's best to make a reservation.

There's a nice botanical garden in Zagreb just west of the train station. It's not unbelievable, but a relaxing diversion if you are tired of seeing "sites" all day and not far from the downtown core.
