I did not buy tickets ahead of time and there were plenty of seats. I was there at the beginning of October 2005. I went in connection with a bus trip from the town in which I was home exchanging. I bought one of the cheaper tickets to the musical and, when I got there, they exchanged the ticket for free for one in the orchestra about 5-10 rows back on the leftish side.
If you are there in the off season, I would ask how full the house is. If there are plenty of seats, I would recommend buying cheaper seats. You could probably move up at intermission if it is not full--if they do not give you orchestra seats before the performance starts.
This show is as good as the best Broadway musicals--maybe better. I loved it! Just make certain to ask for the English plot summary.

In my attempt to secure tickets I realize my inability to do so is because the musical is closed! See link

Thanks for the definitive answer to what I've suspected for a while -- that it is indeed closed once again. When I couldn't find any way to book tickets even on the German ticket sites, I suspected it was not running this summer.

It is truly a shame this musical has closed. I did not find that my minimal German (and I do mean minimal) interfered with my enjoyment. I also did not find that the musical was "kitch".
The real problem was that people generally only stop in Fussen for a couple of hours, see Neueschwanstein and go.
Well, guys, you missed an excellent show!

I'm not sure what the version was like at Oktoberfest, but we did a backstage tour of the specially built theatre at Fussen. It was a marvel. There were a number of water effects including major fountains and a pool that rose up from the stage floor. A complete traveling production would be quite a challenge.
Kitsch? You mean like Wagnerian operas, for example? I'd say that would have been my closest comparison.

Wagner meets Franz Lehar and then some.
Truly melodic music; a wonderfully dramatic ending and overall just great fun.
We enjoyed what I am sure some would call not great food in the theatre's dining area and strolling outside along the shors of the lake.
I'm sorry it has closed and glad we got to see it on two different occasions before it did so.
