Worth seeing King Ludwig II musical?
 

Off to Fussen in two weeks and considering seeing the King Ludwig II musical. Has anyone see it and do they recommend attending?

dont expect broadway-perfection, but since the location is beautiful (the real castle as background) its worth going there

Is this still a worthwhile activity, if one has about 2 and a half days for touring the G-P/Fussen area?

We enjoyed it very much a couple years ago, and enjoyed the backstage tour earlier in the day as well (although there was no English spoken on the tour).

But I thought I had read that this show had closed and the theatre was either empty or doing other things. No?

what a fabulous idea!! you know, I get so much great info from this board, I always want to return the good advice... I will try and go-- have to see if we have enough time in the area though, with lots to see in the 2 and half days we're there.... will do a trip report, in any event upon my return in November! ;)

For what is actually "high operetta" in the shadow of Neuschwanstein plus a chance to eat with the Germans..and I do mean right NEXT to them..all that and the very dramatic ending (unless they've changed it) the thing is unbeatable.

No, haven't been within the past 12 months but if it is still running that's pretty successful by any standards. Whether or not it is worth it is up to you.

I was there at the end of September and it was definitely still running. We didn't go, we had about as much time as you and didn't want to sacrifice the time. It's a beautiful area. We stayed in Schwangau. Try and go to the Tegelberg Gondola area. It's fun to watch the hang gliders and ride the luge. And of course have a beer in the beer garden!

Just wondering if anyone has seen this musical in the last six months. I am not able to find information about it and suspect it might be closed. Also, is the musical in German?

When it was running (don't know if it still is) the entire production was in German.

I found a website using Google but the site wouldn't come up so it may very well have closed.

Dukey, that link you posted is dated in 2004. The old musical did indeed close then, but as you can see from Dohlice, a new version was apparently playing as recently as this past September.

So I'm not sure if that means it's playing again this summer.

And although the old version was only in German, it was like an opera with subtitles projected in English.

When I tried to Google the production their webpage wouldn't come up.

Perhaps someone else who knows for sure whether or not it is still open in any form will post.

Had forgotten about the sub/sur/whatever titles..you are correct. I've seen it twice and simply enjoyed it for some of the music alone.

Enjoy what? We haven't decided yet if the show is even playing, or if it is, if it is the same show they used to have.

Sounds like pure, Frankenstein like horror. Just like Tyrolean schuhplattlers.

I have seen the new version of "Ludwug II" and it is nothing short of terrific. In my book, it is a "must see".

When you enter the theater, ask in the gift shop for the English plot summary. That will get you through it. You can sort of get most of what is going on with the help of the plot summary.

The music is wonderful. I have it on my IPOD and listen to it all the time.

By the way, if you go to "Ludwig II" in the off season (and May is still the off season), do not buy expensive seats. I went in October 2005 and they reseated us in the orchestra somewhere in the first 10 rows because it was not full. If you see people exchanging tickets, join the line. They will be getting better seats for nothing.

Look in the program. A lot of the leads singing in German are from the US or Canada.

Again, it is an absolutely terrific show. The staging, set design and lighting are a marvel in addition to the singing.

I think the sequel Ludwig II, is a lot better than the original Ludwig I
