World Cup 98--Bad Time To See Paris??
We are planning to visit Paris in mid June. It appears this is the same time as the World Cup. Does anyone know if this will be bad time to go? We want it to be bustling and exciting, but not a nightmare. Is Paris taken over by this interesting activity, or only certain areas?? We may even want to attend a match. Sounds fun! However, we are coming to see PARIS.......Please help.....

Weather-wise, this is an excellent time to visit Paris. People are, indeed, flocking to Paris and the various other venues around France for the world cup. Those attending the festivities will certainly be out and about between games. The problem with going at this time this year is obtaining the flights you prefer, hotel reservations and reservations at some of the more famous and/or popular restaurants. Based on what I have read on various other travel boards, hotel reservations are already difficult to come by. We had planned to go in June, but rescheduled our trip for May. We've been to Paris in September, and the weather is very pleasant then as well. I would not recommend July or August due to the very hot weather. Parisians desert the city in August and a lot of restaurants and shops are closed. Only a small percentage of hotels have air conditioning and these fill up fast. Good luck with your planning.

I have to say that Paris may be a mess during the World Cup. You will have to set your dates of travel very quickly regarding flights and hotels. And it is going to be expensive because everybody will be willing to make a big business. You may find tickets to attend a match but it will be outrageously expensive (black market...). Paris will certainly be crowded. So I would say : try to go just before or after. July is still ok. Most of the restaurants closings happen in August. I am living in Paris and I am really not looking forward to this Football cup. It is going to be a mess...

We are also planning to go to Paris towards the end of June. We are looking at flying to London and then taking the Chunnel into Paris. I was trying to stay at the Marriott (free points) but the hotel is sold out for that period. I am looking at apartment hotels now since we have two kids (7 and 10 y.o.) and this maybe the better way to go. Paris is a big city; I wouldn't be discouraged by the World Cup schedule. Book everything early though.

Don't do it. If you never have been to Paris, it would be a shame to spoil it by two events like the world Cup and Tour de France, which is a little later in the season. additional there will also be annual tennis event in June. Paris will be crowded - mostly with tourists - the french are leaving or at least staying out of Paris. It will be almost impossible to get a room, the restaurants won't do their utmost because they are drowning in people and the service will go the same way. Of course Paris will still be charming, it won't change, but If I was you I would reschedule for mid-May or early September. Have a nice trip. Sanne
