NYCFoodSnob, are you saying you can't find a $32 4pound chicken in New York? When was the last time you bought a free-range, organic chicken? The average Parisian housewife is not paying $32 for a chicken, the fact that you wanted the "filet mignon" of birds means nothing to this discussion. You can spend more than that if you want to in the US as well.
That's almost as silly as saying, "Paris is so expensive! We spent $750 for dinner for two at Tallivant, and at home we eat at our favorite local restaurant all the time for less than $50."

And I'll agree that I spend a whole lot more when I travel to New York or Los Angeles that I do anywhere in Europe!

All I know is that I have Cityrama (France) 2002/2003 Sightseeing price list. The Chateaux Country 1 day Tour is priced at $138(winter rate). I just received an email from them quoting $194 per person rate for next week! Ouch! I'm doing something else instead. . .

Hi Jeri,

That's high. It is certainly more than the increase in the euro since 2002.

A higher end restaurant in trendy (annoying) Tribeca had a $32 roasted chicken dish -something with truffle oil mashed potatoes. When the recession hit - the price was lowered to $18 for exactely the same dish - regular customers were livid (and rightly so). It amazes me when Greenspan says there isn't any inflation.

NYCFS - do you go the the butcher on Jones Street?

I fly there (usually once a week for work-just got back again on Thursday). According to a BBC NEWS Economist, they are saying that they would not be surprised to see the rate go up to 1.30 by the year's end!
I am seeing more and more Americans(myself included) buying "jambon and fromage" sandwiches with a beverage for a meal rather than sitting in a bistro having the 19 or 24 Euro fixed meal. Most of the airline crews on layovers are "window shopping" as those ATM slips give you a real dose of reality when you go to exchange!

Now the dollar is down and the euro is up
At the famed Taillevent I now cannot supp
But I also recall (with the wisdom of yore) -
I couldn't afford to eat there before!
As for the bird that cost thirty-two buck
What can I say but ask, "how much for the cluck?"
Life ain't for sissies, it's die if not do
So travel now folks, cuz you can't take it with you!

I nominate Sue_xx_yy as "Fodors Poet Laureate" for the day (at least).

I'm not a poet, but I'll agreee with the other Sue. Everything seems more expensive here too, so why stop living?

Patrick, you missed the point of FoodSnob's post. Of course it doesn't have anything to do with the topic. Her posts never do. She just looks for places to brag about where she buys her clothes, where she dines, and how much money and exquisite taste she has. Her favorite thing is putting down everyone else for lacking her taste. Just ignore her, most of us have learned to do that.

Maybe the way to go right now is to get a tour package that includes most meals. That way, you'll really know your budget. I still think that if you like to go solo, and ditch the tour companies, the best place to go is Eastern Europe. Great architecture, culture, decent cheap food, and people who are MORE than happy to see you and you $.

Well, wasn't that odd? I just posted in response to FoodSnob's nasty remarks to Patrick and to Patrick's apology to FoodSnob and when my comments posted, both those posts disappeared. I guess it's the work of the editors.

Fodors' editors are SOOO uptight. How boring! They should come here and shovel some snow.

I never saw Patrick's apology and one isn't necessary. I don't take any of this (or his outbursts) that seriously.

As for Cowgirl, she's still in the ChubNuts camp...useless. Please don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

FYI: My free-range, organic, 4-lb. chicken (flown in from France) costs $14.36. You can probably get a local one for less at the Union Square outdoor market, except, not today.

Ooops, sorry folks! I just found out that price is "special" from my butcher. Thanks to Patrick, I'll be increasing my Christmas gift to the butcher this year.

D'Artagnan is selling free-range, organic poussin for $5.75 a lb.

Well, I'm afraid that rather high-priced fowl just got pricier since the dollar hit another new "low" against the Euro this past 24 hours.

I really do wonder how bad it will have to get before Europe sees any really "appreciable" drop in tourism...if at all.

I decided to cancel my trip to Europe this summer and was able to get a credit on my airfare. I just dont like the uncertaintly of the dollar and it just drives me crazy to see it drop everyday. I feel so much better for doing so. I will have a year and a half to use the ticket so maybe the dollar will get worse or maybe it will get better. When I use it it will be for a week and I'll save enough to make the trip wothwhile. I have frequent flier miles to do something else next summer so I dont feel cheated by not going. Im sorry and I know I get blasted by some of you but I do feel cheated by this constant depreciating dollar of ours. Hey, Mr. Snow, if you really support a strong dollar, then do something about it!

Dear Maletas,

Why do you feel 'cheated' that the euro has risen? Did you feel that you had been given a present when the euro fell?

These things happen.
