Hi Dax, alas I can't remember the name of the old town cafe, I do remember it was near the Ticino Restaurant on Rathausgasse.
I ended up just missing a direct train back to Basel so while waiting for the next, I spent about 40 minutes at the nearby Aarauerhof Hotel cafe and tried 2 dl of a regional Riesling, which was quite nice. But I don't know the name of the wine, sorry (I'd gone to Aarau to see the old town and to check out Pfister's flagship store in next-door Suhr). Have you ever eaten at the Brasserie Mürset? It seems worth a try.

Riesling from Aarau??? Hmm...I would've never thought of that but why not,I love Riesling from the Danube which is supposed to be improved by the granite dust from the Alps.
No I haven't tried Muerset, it does look ideal. It reminds me so much of a great restaurant in neighboring Baden, but their food must be even better to charge 48 francs for a business lunch...more expensive than business lunch at the 3 Koenige brasserie. I suppose swiss restaurants in small towns can charge more than those in the cities?

Just a quick note--back from Leipzig and Dresden. Both fascinating cities and I hope to visit them again soon.
I tried several good wines while in Dresden and brought back three bottles with plans to order several cases from this site:

A full trip report is coming, but in the meantime, thanks to everyone for their helpful advice.

Glad to hear that, Passerine! Looking foward to your trip report. The Westin in Leipzig is booked for my stay there, so even more interested in *that* review.

IThe 2007 Schloss Proschwitz Spätburgunder went down very well--we will be ordering some cases later this month.

Interesting info about the winery and the family that owns it.

IMO, the story has the makings of a great movie. Wine, war, from wealth to poverty and back, starting your life over from scratch, etc.
