Jason, I really do wish you a great trip, and congrats for packing smaller and smaller...
...but I have to laugh out loud at this thread! Jason, do a search on '22"' and you'll see why...
I'm sure that packing is the most difficult thing you will have to do for this trip. Bon voyage, and do BUY two sweaters!

jason: terrific! You will be much happier not lugging so much. Just one warning - do not be tempted to overfill the small carry-ons. Virgin weighs just about everything so if you exceed the weight limit even a small satchel may be checked. So keep it to around 10 lbs and you will be fine.

It's certainly not safe to leave your bags on the the back seat in Scottish cities. In some parts of the countryside, especially the islands, you could leave them on the roof.I recall seeing on Lewis a large tin of tobacco & some money (notes held down with a stone) left on a fence post at a farm gate to be collected.
We had a case a while back of 2 touring cyclists who had gotten used to leaving their bikes with all their goods safely all over the highlands. They got to Glasgow, left the bikes outside a shop & went in to buy postcards. When they came out, no bikes. They were lucky, their case got publicity & people got together to replace everything.

Whilst I wouldn't leave my bike outside a shop with bags on, anywhere here, I regularly leave things on the back seat of my car when it's parked outside work in Edinburgh. Granted, I wouldn't leave a fully packed suitcase, or laptop, etc., but I do leave coats/jackets, books, etc. I always lock any valuables in the boot, and have been OK (touch wood). I think that if you were struggling, leaving coats in the back would be OK - but you would have to judge as to what area you were parked in! Also, just make sure your insurance covers loss from your car .... it could happen anywhere...
