Why not travel to Switzerland in September?

I've been killing myself searching for cheap airfare to Europe for June (supposedly shoulder season)...So for the heck of it, I plugged in September..Bingo, cheap fares! I've been coming up with $2600 for three people in June, but only $1500 - 1750 for the three of us in September. I don't understand the price difference. Is it that much more preferable to visit in June than September?

The first time I went to Switzerland it was at the end of September through the beginning of October. Advantage: lower hotel prices, many fewer visitors, great weather..what's not to like?

School and colleges are on summer vacation - this may be a factor.

When I was going to Switzerland I posted a question about going in May or September-October, everybody advised Sept-Oct.

For family reasons I went in May, still great! This country is wonderful any time of the year! Well, the less rain, the better

I don't think the price is any reflection on the desirability of Switzerland, rather that more people have summers free to travel so it is more expensive, supply and demand and all that.

Many destinations in Europe will reveal similar airfare patterns, due to school.

My husband and I went to Switzerland (among other places) from the end of Sept. to the beginning of Oct. The prices were GREAT! Only draw back was that we wanted to go further into Switzerland but a cold front came through and we were not ready for that.... clothing wise. But what we did see was beautiful, not crowded and the prices could not be beat. I would say go and have a great time!!

Thanks for the insight everyone. I Have the airline tickets taken care of, good pricing from 1800flyeurope; we should be in Switzerland from Sept 12th-21rst. I'm working up a short list of hotels now; I may not pre-book them with the idea of calling only a day or so before arriving hoping to follow the best weather in a particular area.
